What is patina on a leather shoe?

Patina is the artisanal colouring of leather through successive layers of dyes and pigments applied by hand. Unlike uniformly dyed leather, a patinated shoe reveals tonal variations, transparency, contrast and depth.

This work gives the shoe a more vibrant presence. Depending on the desired effect, a patina can remain discreet and elegant, or become more expressive and distinctive. In every case, the purpose is the same: to create a richer, more nuanced leather than a flat industrial finish can offer.

A well-executed patina does not freeze the shoe in a fixed appearance. It creates a surface that continues to live, react to light and evolve beautifully over time. Handcrafted in the house workshops

Patina relies on a demanding process that calls for experience, precision and artistic sensitivity. Once the shoe has been made in full-grain calf leather, the patina artisan applies successive layers of dyes and pigments by hand. Through layering, blending and controlled burnishing, the color is gradually built up until relief, transparency and depth emerge. Each intervention is manual. No industrial process can reproduce the same subtle transitions, the same transparency, or the same visual tension between shadow and light. This is why no two patinated pairs are ever strictly identical.

How to choose the right patina

Choosing a patina is not only a matter of beauty. It is also a matter of wardrobe, formality and ease of wear.

As a general rule, the darker and more sober the patina, the easier it will be to wear in formal settings. Parisian Gentleman notes that old rigid rules such as “no brown in town” have become less strict, yet the distinction between more formal and more relaxed shoes still remains meaningful.

For a first pair

If you are choosing your first patinated pair, it is wise to begin with shades that are versatile and easy to combine:

For a more expressive style

Classic patinas

Contemporary patinas

Contemporary patinas introduce richer or more unusual tones into classic shoemaking. Midnight blue, burgundy, aubergine or olive green offer a more personal reading of the dress shoe while preserving elegance. Altan currently cites blue, olive green and burgundy as contemporary patina families.

Two-tone patinas

Two-tone patinas play with transitions, contrasts and controlled chromatic movement. They reveal the full mastery of handwork and can give the shoe a more sculptural presence. They associate green with brown colors, grey and bleu, and so on.

Bespoke patinas

While all patinas are made to order, a bespoke patina allows for an even more personal result — a shade designed to harmonise with a wardrobe, a favourite colour palette or a particular vision of elegance.
